Mondette: Shops – Down a Red Stone Path on Melrose, Find Blumera’s Bright-Hued Bags

I’d heard from a couple people about this new-ish handbag shop Blumera on Melrose, and finally stumbled upon it walking east toward La Cienega, across from Urth Caffe. The address is 8570 Melrose Avenue, but you might miss it if you’re not mindful, as it’s tucked down a red stone path amidst lush greenery in the collection of bungalow spaces with Cut by Rhye and other shops. Designer and owner Mehera Blum has created an ultra-feminine, bright intimate space—magenta signage and interior walls, turquoise floors, and really sweet back garden area… (About the collection and prices after the jump.)
Inside, you’ll find Blum’s textural bag collection, inspired by India, and employing Indonesian artisans. Marked by tooled, braided, tasseled, hand-cut leather, silk lining, and silver hardware with inspirational quotes, you get the feeling that the five-year-old collection is very personal.
In terms of pricing, you can get a sense from the Delia styles above—the shoulder bag (top left) is $790, the clutch (top right and bottom images) is $425, and a travel bag is $1,500. The quote from Meher Baba on the clutch handle reads “Real Happiness Lies in Making Others Happy”; “Blumera” is on the other side, which easily flips around.
Blum also does shoes, which I saw only in the sale area. A few jewelry pieces—rings with big, smooth stones—are scattered on a table. I fell in love with the beaded evening bags, I hope she does more.
(There’s a sale section in the front corner of the boutique. This travel bag, with nice exposed lacing, was a part of it.)
